"Am I being reasonable, or not?"
Reasonable, yes.
Effective in waking up your wife? Time will tell.
Wishing you strength and peace.

why does every ex-elder who went through so much turmoil while being an elder always whine to me about how much it sucked, yet when i mention that i don't want to be one, they suddenly get all nostalgic and tell me what a blessing it is to serve as an e-man?.
elder.. period.. maybe i might have a change of heart one day if they actually require these men to have some sort of actual psychological/communication training or if they start handing out paychecks.
but until then, i respectfully decline.. .
Possible reply:
"Well Brother Recruiter, I don't think I could really enforce the current thinking about Higher Education with a clear conscience. Let me know if the Society starts to take a more moderate stance in the future."

i was talking to an elder friend of mine.
he says they got a letter in that makes it more strict for a brother to reach out as an ms. if there was ever a letter written on the prospected brother regarding past wrongdoing, he is now practically turned down without question by the circuit overseer.
elder friend said society may even impliment background checks on anyone reaching out.
Of course they do background checks. Right before the meeting when he gets announced as a new MS, they ask him if he's ever sexually abused children.
The Holy Spirit will make sure he tells the truth.

if you were on a hiring panel for a new chair of the federal reserve board, would either a neatly trimmed beard or a bow tie even register on your dress and grooming "radar"?.
i'm talking ben bernanke, (current chairman of the fed).
richard abrahamson, secretary/treasurer of the wtb&ts of pennsylvania since 2000. i looked all over and couldn't find a picture of him, but he's famous for his bow ties.
chickpea: "abrahms i think his name was,"
Possiblllyyyyyyyy............. Abrahamson?

Wow, Volo.
Too bad the elder/architect didn't ask the CO to give the Secretary/Treasurer of the WTB&TS a phone call for his input on this life-or-death issue.

My wife came up with the JW female analogue to beards.......................
Slacks!
Well-tailored slacks are fine for women in the business community, but woe to the JW woman who dares to don a pair for the Kingdom Hall.

i've been reading this thread for some time and finally had the opportunity to create an account.
i am anxious to meet you all and have a support group/active audience over the next crucial months and years following.
background: long-time doubter, giving way to frustration and skepticism beginning about 10 years ago and finally to total admission that this is a cult and that atheism is the way to go.
Bit of Skeptics Guide Podcast trivia:
Did you know that one of the early co-host's, Perry DeAngelis (now deceased), was married to a JW?
Freaked me out when I heard him say that.

LOL @ brotherdan.
I think his "Mad Scientist" hair stands out the most.

Great first post and welcome to JWN!
Much of what you said resonates with my experiences.
Looking forward to your posts and, perhaps, your podcast.
(Have you listened to "The Skeptics Guide to the Universe" podcast?)
I've been a regular listener for quite a while.

Thanks to everyone for the replies so far.
I just remembered another Bethel-approved badge of individuality, but you've gotta have the genes for it:
Eyebrows!
Max Larson & Don Adams really sport some doozies. They certainly could trim them down, but nooooooo. They let those bad boys grow as far as God predetermined they should go.
Here's Don Adams,
Max Larson's are, IMO, the biggest in Bethel, but I couldn't find a decent-sized photo of him.
